AROUND 1910, the rivalry between various cottagers for the best-stocked stable escalated. Here, a governess and her young charge in their simple basket-style governess cart pose with their coachman, standing at attention, to show off their striking pony outside the Blair estate gates. Down the road, New York financier Ernesto Fabbri had stocked his stables with a handsome collection of eleven horses, many brought over from Europe, and a comparable number of carriages.

Some cottagers, such as Edward B. McLean, publisher of the Washington Post, set out to create a typical English estate, adding sheep, dogs, and chickens to his collection of prize-winning horses. No fine estate is complete without glittering jewels, so McLean purchased the Hope Diamond for his wife, which his family later donated to the Smithsonian.
